Foot & Disc Golf

Disc Golf

DiscGolf

What is Disc Golf?

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc or Frisbee®. The sport was formalized in the 1970’s and shares with “ball golf” the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws). A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to an elevated metal basket, which is the “hole”.

As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive throw from the spot where the previous throw has landed. The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. Finally, the “putt” lands in the basket and the hole is completed. Disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf, whether it’s sinking a long putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway.

Who Plays Disc Golf?

Disc golf can be played from school age to old age, making it one of the greatest lifetime fitness sports available. Specially-abled and disabled participate, giving them the opportunity to take part in a mainstream activity. Because disc golf is so easy to learn, no one is excluded. Players merely match their pace to their capabilities and proceed from there. The Professional Disc Golf Association is a membership-based organization in 47 countries, with over 100,000 members, the PDGA is the governing body for the sport and sanctions competitive events for men and women of every skill level from novice to professional. Thousands of permanent disc golf courses can be found all across the globe.

And, of course, there’s the sheer fun of the game – no matter what your age or skill level!

Hickory Sticks Disc Golf Course is FREE to youth (under 18) and also FREE to Van Wert YMCA Members!  $5 per person for adults or non-Van Wert YMCA Members.

What is Foot Golf?
Footgolf is a precision sport, in which players kick a soccer ball into a cup in as few shots as possible. The name is a combination of football and golf, being more closely related to golf.

The game is played similarly to golf, with the exception that players use a soccer ball instead of a golf ball, and the ball is kicked rather than struck with a club, working toward a 21-inch “cup” in place of the usual golf hole. The player who finishes the course with the fewest shots wins. Indeed, footgolf is often played on golf courses, though it may also be played on specially built grass footgolf courses. The first shot has to be played from the tee box, and bunkers, trees, water and hills must be crossed or avoided in order to reach the hole.

The game is played with a regulation No. 5 soccer ball. As football-soccer balls cannot be propelled as far as golf balls in one shot, footgolf is played on holes shorter than those used in golf, with most holes averaging 157 yards. Pars are typically 5 shots or fewer.

Hickory Sticks Spring Opening Update

Hickory Sticks Spring Opening Update

Opening March 30, 2026 with early spring playing conditions. Carts will be available and cart path only play.

The sunshine has got everyone ready to tee off, and we are excited to get the course open and operating at full compacity. Hickory Sticks staff and volunteers have been hard at work preparing the golf course for opening. This week we will have over 20 staff and volunteers cleaning up the course from the wind storm. We have several trees down, branches and corn husks are everywhere, a trampoline in our irrigation pond and trash across the course.  While this weekend would be a great time to open, we will not be ready after the windy setback we encountered. In addition, Wehrkamp Aeriation will be here this Saturday and Sunday completing the final step in our greens recovery plan that we started in the fall.  They will be slit seeding the greens and focusing on the patch kill areas. Between Wehrkamps and our chemical representatives say they expect a full recovery.

Please be patient as we work hard to get the course open. If you are interested in volunteering in our pre-opening process please reach out to Sean Knoch, Corey Clifton, Joel Whitman or Hugh Kocab.
